January 23rd: “Remember When Rock Was Young”

This spectacular musical journey celebrates the decades of chart topping hits by Sir Elton John, including: Benny and the Jets, Philadelphia Freedom, Crocodile Rock, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Candle in the Wind. Guest Conductor, Jason Altieri will lead the NFSO in accompaniment. This show will be held January 23 at 7:30 p.m. on the Mainstage at Mattie Kelly Arts Center. January 25th: Planetarium Special Feature “Sordid Secrets of the Stars”

Discover the sizzling stories behind the constellations in this planetarium event for adults (18+). Explore Meso-American legends and mythology hidden in the sky as you take a trip through the cosmos during the ultimate planetarium adventure. Much like all our Sordid Secrets, this is an adult event, as those Mayan, Incan, and Aztec gods definitely didn’t keep things rated PG!

Our Planetarium is an inflatable dome. Guests sit on cushions on the floor of the planetarium to view the show. Due to size, space is limited to 15 patrons at a time. Purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended for this reason. On show nights, please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled showing. In case of no-shows/late shows: reserved spots will be released at show time to make space for the next party.

Shows begin at 6 and 7 pm and last approximately 45 minutes.

Seating is limited and very popular. We encourage purchasing your tickets in advance, as this is a first come, first served event. Please call 850-664-1261, stop by the Science Center, or use our online ticketing option to purchase your tickets.

February 6th: Palate & Palette – A Four Course Wine Dinner & Live Painting

Save the date for Shelter House’s 5th Annual Palate & Palette Dinner, to be held February 6, 2021 from 6-10pm! This year, the event will feature five local unique artists and be hosted as five different intimate dinners across Okaloosa and Walton Counties. Each artist will create unique pieces and at the end of the evening, these works of art will be auctioned off to the highest bidder in an exciting and competitive virtual auction!

Each wine dinner will be its own unique experience, showcasing the talents of a different chef and artist. Attendees will indulge in a four-course seated dinner with each course paired with hand-selected fine wines from around the world. The expansive silent auction will be held through a virtual software platform and offer prize packages including fishing trips, restaurant experiences, custom art, spa packages, and more. Guests may select the dinner of their choice on a first come, first serve basis, with a maximum capacity of 30 attendees per location.

Tickets are $150 per person and can be purchased online at 850tix.com. All proceeds benefit Shelter House, the state-certified domestic and sexual violence center serving both Okaloosa and Walton counties. Tickets are non-refundable. If unable to attend, ticket holders may gift their seat or consider it as a charitable donation.

February 15th: Build-a-Bot Workshop

CREATE YOUR OWN ROBOT FEBRUARY 15
This drop-off program is an excellent activity for elementary-age students and a fun project for middle or high schoolers. During the workshop, students will learn how to build, paint, and then code a bot, resulting in a completely unique robot to bring home!

February 20th: “Stars & Stories of Africa” Planetarium Feature

Celebrate Black History Month with a special planetarium event! We’ll travel the cosmos to learn more about the ancient Kush people, exactly what the Kenyan Borana Star Calendar was, and identify the Swahili names for the planets. You’ll get to hear African folklore stories and even discover how enslaved African Americans were able to follow the stars to freedom in the north.

Shows begin at 6 and 7 p.m. All shows last approximately 45 minutes.

March 19th: “Egyptian Myths” Planetarium Feature

Join the Emerald Coast Science Center to see what the stars looked like thousands of years ago to the astronomers of Ancient Egypt. This family-friendly show will dive deep into the timeless stories of the Egyptian gods Ra, Osiris, Isis, and Horus, and some lesser-known tales about the lion goddess, Sekhmet, and the crocodile god, Sobek. We’ll also learn fun facts about life in Ancient Egypt (such as what the first toothpaste was made of) and tour around the solar system with stops at Earth, Venus, the Sun, and the Moon. This show will end with a magnificent and magical display of Egyptian constellations. Recommended for ages 5+.

March 20th: “The WOW! Factor” Science Show

With its fun and interactive experiments, The WOW! Factor Science Show will show young and old alike how cool science can be. They have fun down to a science. Join us at the Science Center for a free show starting at 11 a.m.

Notice of Filming: when you attend this event, you enter an area where video recording will occur. By entering the event premises, you consent to such recording media and its release, publication, exhibition, or reproduction.

Participating in the show itself is free; admission to the museum is a separate cost. The show is at 11am, and the museum is open for general admission from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 20.

 Ongoing: New COVID Drive-Up Location in Fort Walton Beach

ProHealth, known for their affordable blood work and occupational testing, is expanding its efforts this week, and opening another location in Fort Walton Beach at 2010 Lewis Turner Blvd. The building officially opened for business on Wednesday, December 16,
2020 and offers patients drive-up rapid antigen and antibody covid-19 testing on Monday – Friday from 8am to 3pm and Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

ProHealth has also opened a new COVID-19 testing site in Pensacola this past fall. The Fort Walton Beach location will be the ProHealth’s 9th location in Northwest Florida. Walk-ins are welcome for most services. For more information, please visit
