The story dates back to the 1993 Soul Train Music Awards, when Perez’s date canceled on her shortly before the ceremony. She ended up attending the awards show with Shakur, which caught Madonna’s attention. “She came up to me and she was like, ‘Yo, what’s up? Y’all are together?’ the Oscar-nominated actress recalls. When Perez assured her they weren’t dating, Madonna asked her, “Hook me up.” Perez made the introductions, and the two music icons ended up having a secretive relationship from 1993-1994. Madonna confirmed their relationship during a 2015 interview with Howard Stern. “I was dating Tupac Shakur … and he got me all riled up on life in general,” Madonna said, admitting that the rap star made her feel “very gangster” when she was with him.
